Corona del Mar 11, Varsity 8

March 8, 2011

Trabuco Hills Varsity lost to Corona del Mar for the second time in four days in a near-repeat of the first loss at the Rose Bowl Jamboree.

The Mustangs started off slowly against the host Sea Queens, falling behind 5-0 early in the first half. Three quick goals by Jessie Papageorge’s brought Trabuco Hills back into the game. The Mustangs fought to keep the game close before the break, with another goal by Papageorge’s and one by Rachel Lansner — plus 9 of goalie Jessie Vuzzo’s 12 saves for the game — made keep the deficit to CdM at just 8-5 at half.

Goals by Lizzie Moore (who also had four takeaways and two assists on the day) and Sohee Ki after intermission brought the Mustangs within one goal halfway through the second half. When CdM scored again, Papageorge’s scored her fifth goal on the afternoon to bring it to 9-8. But the Mustangs never got closer.

Notes: Mustangs were outshot 17-5 first half; outshot CdM, 9-6, after the break. … Saturday in Pasadena, CdM jumped out to a 4-0 lead before Trabuco Hills rallied to tie the match. CdM scored a late goal to win, 5-4 … All-time series between two schools now tied 2-2.
