Foothill 13, Varsity 6

Trabuco Hills Girls Lacrosse opened the 2012 season with a 13-6 loss vs. Foothill at Tustin High.

The Mustangs (0-1) controlled the early play, with Jessie Papageorge’s scoring 14 seconds into the game. The Mustangs stayed close, and with 10 minutes gone, after Papageorge’s scored again, it Foothill leading by just, 3-2. But the Knights — a 2011 Orange County semifinalist — scored the last four goals of the half to make it, 7-2, at the break. Foothill then scored the next four goals to build an insurmountable 11-2 lead.

Two goals from Hope Dodd, one from Lexi Witkin and another from Alyssa Ransom got the Mustangs within 6, but Foothill scored the final goal.

Notes: Hannah Redwine had four groundball pickups, Witkin had three. Papageorge’s and Melanie Leong each controlled four draws. Cyrena Malkowitz, in her first Varsity start, had six saves. … Foothill has won all nine contests between the two teams in Trabuco’s six years as a Varsity program
