El Toro 13, Varsity 12 (OT)

It was another Trabuco Hills-El Toro classic as the Mustang Varsity’s sprited late rally got the game to overtime where the Chargers prevailed, 13-12, at Trabuco Hills.

The Mustangs (3-3) came out strong, with goals from Hannah Redwine, Justine Tobias, Jessie Papageorge’s and two from Alyssa Ransom built a 5-1 first half lead. El Toro cut it to 5-2 by half.

After intermission, the Chargers scored five of the next six goals — Papageorge had one for Trabuco in this 15-minute period — to grab a 7-6 lead. El Toro built the lead to 10-7 — Lexi Witkin scored for Trabuco — with three mnutes left.

Rally time! Goals from Hope Dodd, Melanie Leong and Lexi Witkin sent the game to overtime. In the extra session, El Toro scored two quick goals — and the Mustangs couldn’t catch up despite two more goal from Witkin, giving her five on the night!

Notes: Cyrena Malkowski had 17 saves in the loss … Rachel Lansner picked up four ground balls … Redwine had three; Papageorge’s had two ground balls and five draw controls; Dodd had two ground balls and three draw controls. El Toro now leads to all-time series, 8-2 … and has won the last six meetings.
