Varsity 11, Carlsbad 11 (LA-OC)

March 9, 2013

Trabuco Hills Girls Lacrosse Varsity’s 2nd game at the LA/OC Classic was a hard-fought, back-and-forth battle against Carlsbad ending in an 11-all tie.

Carlsbad jumped out to an early lead. The Mustangs tightened up on defense and quickly answered back for the tie. The teams went back and forth all through the first half until the Mustangs pulled ahead 7-5 at halftime. Trabuco had a balanced attack in the half with two goals each from Hope Dodd and Hannah Redwine, and single tallies from Megan McIntyre, Marina Sandoval and Jenelle Phillips.

At the onset of the second half the field tilted slightly in Carlsbad’s favor with three consecutive goals to take an 8-7 lead. The Mustangs stayed focused and fought back. Dodd netted two more second-half goals and Alex Miller also added a goal in between two additional Carlsbad scores resulting in a 10-10 tie with less than five minutes to play.

Carlsbad attacked with renewed energy and took a late 11-10 lead. As the Mustangs fought to get back to even they were called with two late yellow cards. Just as the game looked to be out of reach playing down two players Kendall Derbyshire took the ball down the field and scored to tie the game with only a minute left to play.

Throughout the game great supporting play was noted from Jackie Huse, Melanie Leong, Hannah Redwine and Madison DuMond all for ground ball retrieval, assists, and crisp passing resulting in a solid defensive effort in front of Cyrena Malkowski who stood tall in the crease keeping the game close.

Record: 2-1-2

Next game: Tuesday, hosting Newport Harbor
