Varsity 13, Mira Costa 1 (LA/OC)
In game two of Saturday’s LA/OC Shootout for the Trabuco Hills Girls Varsity Lacrosse, the Mustangs showed little hangover from their first loss of the season earlier in the day.
A game vs. Mira Costa quickly became very physical and was highlighted by tough checking from both teams. The Mustang defense rose to the occasion and cut off any chance for Mira Costa to build any semblance of offense. Melanie Leong helped control the middle of the field by collecting 3 ground balls and causing 3 first half turnovers. Mira Costa was unable to come away with a single turnover and was challenged repeatedly by Rachel Gillet, Caroline Rabourn and Cheyenne Ochoa. The Mustangs had 5 goals off of only 6 shots and led 5-0 at halftime.
The second half opened with the lone Mira Costa goal of the game. Jenelle Phillips answered with her fourth goal and the Mustangs (5-1) kept Mira Costa silent the rest of the game, cruising to a 13-1 win.
Cyrena Malkowski played nearly a perfect game in goal with 9 saves — 7 of from free position shots.
Goal scorers of the game were; Jenelle Phillips (5); Marina Sandoval (3); Melanie Leong (2); Madison Dumond, Jackie Huse and Taylor Fox each added 1.
