Capo Valley 21, Varsity 9 (Playoffs)

May 9, 2014

The No. 8 Trabuco Hills Girls Lacrosse Varsity visited the undefeated and top-seeded Capistrano Valley Cougars in Thursday’s second round of US Lacrosse Southern Section’s Orange County playoffs.

The Cougars won draw control and moved down into Mustang territory. But goalie Cyrena Malkowski stopped a high Cougar shot and fed the ball to the Mustang attack. Madison Dumond moved through the Cougar defense and scored on a low shot that put the Mustangs up 1-0 to open the game. The Cougars came back quickly scoring two unanswered goals. Taylor Fox found Marina Sandoval in front of the Cougar goal and Sandoval scored to even the score at 2-2.

14gteam-sccThe Mustang defense fought hard behind strong marking from Ashly Bradshaw, Hannah Moller and Becca Haggard keeping the score within reach as the Cougars pressed on offense. Down again by two goals, Jenelle Phillips scored the first of her 3 goals, followed by a goal from Jackie Huse. The Mustangs were back in the game at 5-5.

Slowly, the Cougar attack began to wear down the Mustangs. The Mustangs fell behind and tried to rally late in the second half off of another Madison Dumond goal, but the Cougar attack proved to be too much — especially their star, Riley Eggeman who scored 10 goals on the night. The Cougars led 13-7 at half. The Mustangs never stopped fighting against their toughest opponents of the year, but season came to an end with a 21-9 quarterfinal loss to the 17-0 Cougars.

Let’s not forget that the 2014 Mustangs had the best season in the history of Trabuco Hills Girls Lacrosse:

  • They finished with the most wins (17) and fewest (3) losses and look to build on that momentum next season.
  • They captured their second league title in 4 years and have made 8 consecutive playoff appearances, never missing since varsity girls lacrosse came to Trabuco Hills.
  • The future is bright for THGLAX. They have a 101-55-2 all-time record giving them a 65% career winning percentage.
  • Did we mention a JV team that went undefeated in South Coast League play?

Good luck to the Trabuco Hills Girls Lacrosse Class of 2014 … Jacqueline Huse, Melanie Leong, Cyrena Malkowski, Cheyenne Ochoa, Irene Petruzzi, Caroline Rabourn, Shelby Siano and Brittany Tran!

And thank you, Coaches Leong, Ransom and Page for a fantastic season!
