Varsity wins 3rd league title
Trabuco Hills Girls Lacrosse captured the South Coast League title —
their third league crown in seven seasons — with a 14-13 win at San Juan Hills on Thursday night.
The visiting Mustangs (11-3, 6-0 South Coast) were dominant early, building an 8-4 lead in the first half. But the host Stallions (8-6, 3-3 South Coast) were able to close the gap to just one, at 8-7, by half. After the break, both teams briefly held two-goal leads before Mustang Juliet Mooney broke a 13-13 tie with a crease-roll goal with 18 seconds left to give Trabuco the win.
For the Mustangs, Hennessey Evans had seven goals, Juliet Mooney had five scores and Ieneke Jiminez chipped in two. San Juan was led by Hannah Miller’s seven goals with Taylor Austin and Elena Guillen adding two each and Claire Welter one.
Both goalies were busy: Mustang Ashley Bell had 15 saves; Stallion Leia O’brian had 13.
Trabuco’s 2017 league crown follows titles in 2011 and 2014, all under Head Coach Scott Leong.
