Trabuco Hills Girls Lacrosse Varsity on Thursday raised the bar for future Mustangs: the program’s first quarterfinal win after five years of futility.

Trabuco Hills, the No. 5 seed, came from behind to beat host No. 4 Santa Margarita, 12-10, in a extremely physical match.

The two teams spent early parts of the game sharing back-and-forth goals with the score tied at 4 before the Eagles ran off four straight to go up 8-4. Trabuco Hills replied with a goal before half to make it 8-5.

The Mustangs (13-6) came out strong after the break scoring three times to tie the game within 8 minutes. The things got, well, ugly.

Santa Margarita (13-5) scored twice to open up a 2-goal lead, then got called for four yellow cards in the next four minutes — including injuring Trabuco Hills star Hennessy Evans. Those cards made it five on the night for the Eagles and forced to play down two for the rest of the game. The Eagles got two more yellow cards in the game’s waning seconds.

Trabuco Hills took advantage of the Eagles’ missteps, scoring four man-up goals down the stretch. But it wasn’t easy.

Kristen Rosenberg tied the game at 10 with her third goal of the game with 4 minutes remaining. Then Mustang goalie Chiara Reniero, who had 7 saves on the night, made a key stop on an Eagle free position before Evans returned to score her fourth goal — the game-winner — at 1:21 left. Ieneke Jimenez scored her third goal of the game just before the buzzer to ice the victory.

The next stop for the two-time South Coast League champion Mustangs is their first visit to the semifinals, Saturday at 11 am at Segerstrom HS in Santa Ana.

Opponent? No. 1 St. Margaret’s who beat Beckman, 12-6 to advance to the semifinals.

Note: The Mustangs lost quarterfinal matches the last five years … but only other two programs — Foothill and Mater Dei — have made it to the quarterfinals every year since 2013. They’ll meet in the other semifinal on Saturday!
