Brine proves challenging for Mustangs
The Mustangs got a serious look this weekend at the challenges that will be posed again this coming season by some of the top teams in Orange County. The Fall Ball season ended at the Brine Rancho Santa Margarita Invitational with the Mustangs in the 11-team tournament’s top bracket …
- Saturday, the Mustangs opened round-robin play with a 7-6 loss to San Diego #1 (a.k.a. Scripps Ranch High, 5th-ranked in San Diego last year) then tied Mission Viejo, 8-8.
- Sunday started poorly, with a 10-1 trouncing by Seal Beach #1 (a.k.a. Los Alamitos High, defending Orange County champs). Then, the Mustangs rebounded with a hard-fought 4-3 loss to Flash (a.k.a. Foothill High, last year’s Orange County runnerups). But the momentum was short lived as the end of round-robin play was an 8-2 loss to Serrano #1 (a.k.a. arch rival El Toro, an Orange County semifinalist last year).
- That left the Mustangs in the fifth-place game, a rematch with Mission Viejo: a 6-2 loss.
