Trabuco Hills Girls Lacrosse Varsity took a while to get warm, but they eventually defeated Newport Harbor, 12-3, in chilly Newport Beach.

The Mustangs (3-2) could not get in gear early. After 16 minutes of play, Trabuco trailed, 3-2 (goals by Jessie Papageorge’s and Megan McIntyre.) Then, Trabuco got going — holding the Sailors scoreless the remaining 34 minutes.

Goals by Papageorge’s and Lexi Witkin, created the Mustangs’ first lead at 4-3 — where the scored remained by half. After intermission, Trabuco got four goals from Papageorge’s — for a half-dozen on the night — plus scores from Hannah Redwine, Jackie Huse, Justine Tobias and Hope Dodd.

Rachel Lansner picked up four groundballs; Alex Miller and Redwine had three. Witkin had five draw controls. Cyrena Malkowski had six saves. … Last year, Mustangs had lost a tough, 11-10 match at Newport Harbor. Mustangs lead all-time series, 3-2.
