Varsity scrimmages Santa Margarita
With the Rose Bowl Jamboree washed out, Trabuco Hills Girls Lacrosse Varsity hosted the Santa Margarita Eagles for a season-starting scrimmage on a cold rainy Saturday.
The Mustangs opened with crisp passing and a coordinated attack. They were in mid-season form and took the Eagles by surprise by setting a fast pace.
Jenelle Phillips led the Mustangs to six goals before the Eagles could even get a shot on goal. The Eagles attempted to rally to close the half, but the Mustangs were still comfortably ahead.
The second half opened with a long run and goal from Jackie Huse. The Eagles countered quickly with a goal and started to match the Mustangs pace and intensity. A pass from Madison Dumond for another Jenelle Phillips goal snapped any hope for an Eagle rally. The Mustangs never looked back, and finished in strong fashion.
If we were really keeping score, it would have looked like a 17-6 win.
Cyrena Malkowski once again proved to be a daunting adversary to the opposing offense. She blocked every free position shot, and had 14 saves.
Mustang goal scorers: Jenelle Phillips (11), Jackie Huse (3), Marina Sandoval (1), Madison Dumond (1) and Kendall Derbyshire (1).
Next game: Tuesday at Esperanza
