Trabuco Hills Girls Varsity Lacrosse team — riding the best start in program history at 9-1 –hosted the Temecula Valley Golden Bears on Tuesday.
The Mustangs jumped out quickly with a Melanie Leong goal in the first 15 seconds. The Golden Bears were able to win control and threatened the Mustang goal with several shots. Ashly Bradshaw and Jackie Huse bolstered the strong Mustang defense with their physical marking and frustrated the Golden Bears attackers. Cyrena Malkowski stopped a free position shot and the ball went back into Mustang control. Jenelle Phillips scored back to back goals and the Mustangs began to pull away from the Golden Bears. At the halfway point the Mustangs were dominating control of the game. They had 11 ground balls to the Golden Bears 4 and had accounted for 9 first half takeaways without losing a single turnover. The score at the half was 7-0.
Kendall Derbyshire opened the second half with her third goal in a row. Derbyshire finished the game leading the Mustangs with 4 goals and 3 assists. Cyrena Malkowski kept the Golden Bears scoreless until the final 6 minutes of play. She had 8 saves with 6 coming from the free position. The Mustangs nearly matched their first half pace and finished the game on a Samantha Ransom goal to beat the Golden Bears, 13-2.
The Mustangs had 15 takeaways on the game and ended without a turnover for the first time all season. Shelby Siano and Ashly Bradshaw both had their first games back from injury and were a welcome sight on defense.

Next up for the 10-1 Mustangs (2-0 South Coast League) will be key league match vs. Tesoro at home on Thursday.
