Varsity 13, El Toro 9
The Trabuco Hills Girls Varsity Lacrosse team took on the El Toro Chargers in the final South Coast League game of the season. A win by the Mustangs would crown them as league champions.
Right from the start the Mustangs asserted control of the game. Kendall Derbyshire connected on a pass to Melanie Leong who weaved through traffic and scored. In less than minute the Mustangs followed up with a pass from Madison DuMond to Jenelle Phillps for another score. The Mustang defense responded to the Charger attack by closing off the attacking lanes and pushing the Chargers to the outside. Aggressive one-on-one defense from Cheyenne Ochoa and Ashly Bradshaw caused the Chargers to lose control of the ball. The Mustangs kept up their attack and surged ahead. Marina Sandoval intercepted a ball and passed to Melanie Leong who shot it past the goalie putting the Mustangs in the lead, 5-0.
The Chargers scored and slowly began to work themselves back in the game. At the half the Mustangs were in the lead 9-5.
The second half opened with a goal from Jackie Huse. The Chargers answered with back-to-back goals and started to climb their way back into the game. With the score at 10-7 it looked like the Chargers were starting to gain momentum. Madison DuMond scored from the free position followed by a goal from Jenelle Phillips that put the game out of reach for the Chargers. In the final play of the game Taylor Fox fired a low shot from the free position and scored making the final score 13-9. The Trabuco Hills Girls Varsity Lacrosse team came away with their 15th win — a team record for wins in a season and are now reigning South Coast League champions.
