May 4, 2014

Trabuco Hills Girls JV completed a sweep of the South Coast League with an overtime victory at El Toro on Thursday at El Toro High School.

The first half opened with El Toro owning the first draw control and taking two balls to the back of the net past goalie Erin Beall. Ten minutes into playing time, senior Irene Petruzzi gained control of the ball and was able to make it through the strong El Toro defense to put the Mustangs on the scoreboard for the first time in the game. Trabuco followed up with three more goals from Shannon Smith (2) and Jacquie Cronkrite (1). With less than three minutes left in the half, El Toro was able to move the ball past the Mustang’s defense, closing the half 4-3, Trabuco.

The second half opened with El Toro scoring first, tying the game, 4-4. Trabuco and El Toro traded goals twice in a fast passed, hard fought battle. With less than a minute in the half and Trabuco up 6-5, El Toro gained possession of the ball and off a foul by Trabuco’s defense, the Chargers were able to make a goal to tie the game 6-6.

Officials and coaches conferred and agreed to an overtime period of six minutes; first to score takes the victory. Trabuco’s Kaylyn Voytilla stepped up to take the draw. The ball was thrown toward the Trabuco goal and Cronkrite was able to gain control and take a run to the net. She was blocked and forced to pass, but lost control. She regained possession and shot past the goalie into the net — less than two minutes into the extra period. It means Trabuco JV was 8-0 in league play, first undefeated league season for the JV since 2011.

Trabuco Hills took a total of 15 shots on goal, owned 8 of the 15 draw controls, and controlled 22 of the 26 ground balls. Goal scorers: Cronkrite (4), Smith (2) and Petruzzi (1). Goalie Beall had 9 saves.

Next: Trabuco Hills (14-2) plays in the Lax-a-palooza tournament at Laguna Hills High School, May 3.
