Varsity scrimmages Mission Viejo
Trabuco Hills Varsity Girls Lacrosse team opened the 2015 season with their official scrimmage vs. Mission Viejo.
Now, scores of scrimmages aren’t officially kept but if they were … It would have looked like a 19-3 Mustang win over their cross-town rival Diablos. Some highlights:
- Strong teamwork was on display on both offense and defense as the girls assisted on 11 of the 19 goals and worked together to limit scoring opportunities for their opponent.
- Kendall Derbyshire opened the scoring less than two minutes into the scrimmage, scooping up a rebound and finding a seam in the defense to net the goal. She led all scorers with four goals and two assists. Taylor Fox also scored four goals, including three in a row in the second half. But they weren’t the only ones finding the net, with scoring spread among 10 players on the day. Jenelle Phillips and Audie Shutler each had two goals and two assists. Madi DuMond and Becca Haggard each had a goal and two assists, while Juliet Mooney added two goals. Samantha Ransom, Marina Sandoval, and Kaylyn Voytilla rounded out the scoring with a goal each.
- Many of those scoring opportunities were the result of pressure defense forcing turnovers and errant passes as the Mustangs pounced on loose balls. Ashley Murillo sprinted halfway to Chicago to chase down a loose ball in our end, sending it back up field for one of Taylor’s goals. Just before half, Kody Shelton won a mad scramble for the ball and three passes later for the Mustangs’ 11th goal.
Next match: Tuesday, season opener vs. El Dorado at Trabuco Stadium, 5:30 p.m.
