Varsity 25, Dana Hills 4

April 24, 2016

Trabuco Hills Varsity Girls Lacrosse scored early and often to rack up a record-setting 25-4 non-league win over the Dana Hills Dolphins on Friday night.

The 25 goals were the most ever for the Mustangs — they reached 23 twice previously — and the 21-goal advantage tied the school record for the largest margin of victory, set in 2010 in a 22-1 win over Woodbridge.

After a quick Hennessey Evans goal just 30 seconds into the match, Dana Hills held the ball for several minutes before tying the game 1-1 at the 18:32 mark of the first half. Then the Mustangs opened their stable, unleashing a flurry of goals that led to a 13-1 halftime score. The Dolphins, playing like fish out of water, couldn’t keep up. Many of the goals came within seconds of each other as Trabuco Hills controlled more than 2/3 of the draws and quickly turned the advantage into scoring opportunities.

The match also proved to be a tune-up for the defense in preparation for a Tuesday meeting with Tesoro, a game that will likely determine league champion. The Mustangs applied end-to-end pressure, forcing turnovers and shutting down scoring chances. Dana Hills managed just seven shots on goal during the 50-minute contest.

The Mustangs high-scoring trio of Evans (11), Juliette Mooney (6), and Kendall Derbyshire (4) accounted for most of the goals, with Shannon Smith (2), Sierra Knudsen and Hannah Moller rounding out the scoring. But it was a crisp passing attack that led to many of the goals, resulting in 12 assists. Mooney was the benefactor of a five-pass sequence started by goalie Ashley Bell and including a pressure-busting “give-and-go” between Ashley “Chicago” Murillo and Shannon Smith.

Record: 12-2, 5-1 South Coast League

Next match: Tuesday, April 26 at Tesoro
