Trabuco Hills Girls Lacrosse Varsity couldn’t solve Corona del Mar again, and had their season end in the first round of the OC/US Lacrosse Orange County championship playoffs, 14-10, at Laguna Hills Stadium. CdM had beaten the Mustangs at season-opening Rose Bowl Jamboree (5-4) and the next week (11-8).

Trabuco Hills didn’t start out poorly, as has been a bad habit all season. The teams were tied, 1-1, after 8 minutes. But the Sea Queens reeled off 4 consecutive goals in 5 minutes, to grab a 5-1 advantage. By half, it was 12-6.

It was time for another second half rally, but the gap was too large. Freshman goalie Cyrena Malkowski made her Varsity debut after intermission, stopping 10 of 12 shots.
The Mustangs did come within 4 goals with 6 minutes left, but never got closer.

Notes: Jessie Papgeorge’s scored 4 goals, giving her 60 on the season — breaking the Mustang record of 59 set last year by Morgan Chaney. Other Mustang scorers were Hannah Redwine (2), Lizzie Moore, Taylor Nunez, Sohee Ki and Lexi Witkin. … Ashley Brewer had 2 takeaways and picked up 2 ground balls; Papageorge’s had 4 ground balls; Redwine had 3 takeaways and Moore picked up 3 ground balls. … Quirk? Mustangs gave up 27 fewer goals (74 to 101) in the second half this past season.

Record: 12-8; 7-1 Sea View (champions)

Next: Team Banquet, May 18.
