CdM 9, JV7

May 7, 2011

Trabuco Hills Girls Lacrosse’s JV started out well in their final pool play match at the Surf City Invitational in Huntington Beach vs, Corona del Mar. But the Mustangs fell victim to a swift second-half rally by the Sea Queens.

CdM scored soon after the opening draw, but Hope Dodd responded with a goal with 20 minutes left in the first half.  Then a pass from Dodd to Melanie Leong put the Mustangs ahead 2-1 with 15 minutes to go.  At 10 minutes left, Payton Nunez scored to give the Mustangs a 3-1 lead.  But then CdM battled back, scoring twice quickly tying the score at 3. With 2 minutes left in the half, the Mustangs rallied as Jackie Huse fed Dodd for a score; then Delaney Shelton in the half’s last minute to give Trabuco Hills a 5-3 advantage at the break.

After the half, though, CdM came on strong, scoring five unanswered goals to put them ahead 8-5 with 14 minutes. The Mustangs responded with a goal by Leong, but they couldn’t sustain a rally.  CdM held them off, scoring an insurance goal with 3 minutes left. Dodd’s goal made it a 9-7 final for CdM.

Notes: Mustang JV opened the year with a loss to CdM. Trabuco Hills had 26 shots. … Mustang goalie Cyrena Malkowski had 12 saves.

Record: 16-6-1
